Christmas gammon

I always pop a gammon in on Christmas morning and have experiemented over the years with a number of different methods, from honey and mustard and cloves and pretty patterns to Nigella’s coca-cola recipe.

However, the one below is something I dreamt up one Christmas eve having spent the evening watching Only Fools & Horses reruns and drinking mulled wine. I knew there was some of the wine left and thought hmmmmm I wonder?

So a star was born as they say. Stick the gammon in your slow cooker on Christmas morning with 2-3 inches of mulled wine. You can of course do this in the oven but who has the space when cooking dinner for hoards of extra guests? Not me. Let the slow cooker do all the work for you here and let it fester on  the side in the kitchen all day – it will be ready for your Christmas night supper. Husband usually has a nibble that night with some homemade chutney but it really comes into it’s own on Boxing Day with our family ritual of gammon, egg & chips for tea.

The smell that will waft around your house absolutely encapsulates Christmas and it takes on a glorious festive red hue around it’s outside. I urge you to try this – I promise you will absolutely love it.
